Philip received his Bachelor of Science in Soil Science/Botany in 1994 from the University College of North Wales Bangor. He currently lives in Oloron, France, while working in New Zealand, Japan, China, the USA, and South Africa.

Philip grew up in Hampshire, southern England, and married his wife, Lynnette, in 1977. They have five children and two grandchildren, with another grandchild expected this autumn. The couple resides near the Pyrenees mountains on the France/Spain border.
