Martin Harris

Martin Harris is the founder of the consultancy firm Agropedo, based in Potchefstroom, South Africa. Agropedo specializes in physical soil classification, soil nutrient analyses, variable rate prescriptions for lime, gypsum, fertilizer, and seed, leaf and plant sap analyses and recommendations, in-season crop consultancy, and yield data analyses and recommendations.

Martin has worked in precision agriculture as a soil classification specialist and agronomist for 15 years. He began his career as a soil classification specialist, providing a solid foundation for his agronomic experience. He prides himself on being a practical agronomist in the field and is an analytical person focused on details and results. His strengths lie in problem-solving and the practical implementation of recommendations. Kobie Krog serves as the in-house GIS specialist, while Hardus Benade joined the team in 2021 as a graduate in soil science and agronomy. Currently, Hardus is completing a two-year internship at Agropedo, where he will be introduced to clients to enhance service delivery and consultancy.

In the past year, Agropedo has diversified from focusing solely on cash crops to include animal and pasture production. Hennie du Toit joined the company in March 2022 as an animal and pasture scientist. The company believes that regenerative agriculture is key to future production and is positioning itself to meet the demand for knowledge in cropping, animal, and pasture production systems.

Agropedo became part of the Brookside Labs team in 2019, ensuring high standards in service and repeatability of analyses. It is important for the company to be associated with the best in the business.

As a youngster, Martin aspired to be a professional rugby player, but injuries during college ended those dreams. Nowadays, he spends his free time with his wife, Lize, as they prepare for their first child, facing new challenges on the horizon. While he still loves sports, he currently has time for only the occasional round of golf. Martin began farming with a herd of Beefmaster cattle in 2013 and later expanded into Bonsmara, a locally bred cattle breed. He is currently farming 80 head of Beefmaster and 120 head of Bonsmara cattle, focusing on high-intensity grazing systems and cover crop rotations on rented fields. After the cover crop is grazed, the landowner plants these fields with no-till maize, soybeans, or sunflowers.
